Sports Murals Are A Hit!

If you want to paint sports murals from scratch, there are a lot of places that you can find ideas.

Team Logos

Team logos are great for sports murals. Whether the logo belongs to your favorite high school team, a college basketball team, or a pro hockey team, the logo artwork and the color scheme will likely be simple enough that you should be able to complete the mural in no time with the help of a projector.

You can even search for team logos online using Image Search. For example, one of my favorite teams is the Indianapolis Colts. By entering Indianapolis Colts logo in the search box, I can pull up several variations of the logo and decide which one I want to use.

Coloring Books

Sure, you will probably not want to use coloring book pages to paint sports murals in your den, but you may find something your 5-year old will love for his bedroom. To get started, check out some of the websites that offer free coloring book printables.

For example, Crayola has about half a dozen pictures that would work well for kids’ sports murals. You will need to set up an account to access the free coloring pages (found under the “Coloring & Activities” tab), but it only takes a minute. Added bonus – when I set up my account, I received a coupon to their online store!

Artwork

Recently, I picked up four art prints on clearance that I am going to use as the inspiration for a sports wall mural in my youngest son’s room. The prints are very simple – each one depicts a stick figure playing a different sport.

And now, to get to the point - don’t automatically assume that purchased artwork will be too difficult or expensive to duplicate as a wall mural in your home. However, due to copyright laws, do limit your use of this type of artwork to personal use.

Phrases

Sports murals can be enhanced with simple phrases.

Here are just a few examples. I'm sure you will be able to think of even more...

  • Imagine a baseball mural accented with one of these phrases: Play Ball! Home Run! Going…Going…Gone! Batter Up!

  • Here are some ideas for a basketball mural: Hang Time! Hoop it Up! Slam Dunk! Swish!

  • Or if a football mural is your thing: Fumble! Touchdown!

  • Some ideas for hockey murals: Face Off! Hitting the Ice! The Puck Stops Here!

  • And for you World Cup fans, here are some phrases for soccer murals: Goal! What a Kick! Spread Out! (I don’t know how many times I have heard my son’s soccer coach exclaim that last one!)

You can use stencils to help paint the phrases, or if you want something even easier than that, make sure you check out our page about rub on wall transfers. They are fairly inexpensive and are a real time-saver.
